Three Mile Dam is located in the Alpine area, about 10km from Kiandra on the Mount Selwyn Road, or 14 km from the nearest facilities at Cabramurra. Although the road is often not accessible in the winter months due to the area’s complete snow cover, the dam is open to fishing all year round.
All types of fishing are allowed in this lake, but fly fishing early and late in the season tends to be the most productive. Using small lures is also a good way to catch fish in this lake. It’s home to all types of trout, but brown trout are the most common. Canoes are allowed, but powerboats are not.
If you’re in the area, Three Mile Dam is definitely worth a visit for either the fishing in the nearby Eucumbene River or the sightseeing opportunities of the old abandoned gold town of Kiandra.
One of the highest elevation dams in the area, extreme weather conditions can be experienced at any time of year. There is no mobile phone coverage in the area, and Adaminaby is the closest town for supplies.
